Online Learning is the future

-->

Two interesting stories point to the future of online learning. The first titled “Online learning: the future is here” has particular interest as it refers to a middle school student, which is effectively what I refer to in this blog as ‘junior youth’, notably those youth aged 12-15 years of age, and typically at junior high level. It says:

In California, a middle school student, recovering from a long-term illness; who could not attend his school for long and cannot afford to go out for tuitions; checks his online tutoring website and schedules a class for his lessons and homework assignments. In Illinois, a busy professional who cannot speak Spanish, collaborates on an online tutoring website and registers for weekend classes to meet his business requirement of dealing with Spanish. A number of factors are driving the expansion of online education in the United States and around the world, chief among them being the growing demand for specialized knowledge in today’s complex, information-based society. Not only is knowledge expanding but the ease with which it can be shared is becoming vital. Advances in digital technology, moreover, allow for much greater interaction with instructors and other students also allowing multimedia applications and real-time conversations for anyone with a reliable broadband connection to the Internet.
….Instructions through a real time tutor, educational games and simulations can engage students in higher-level cognitive thinking, such as interpreting, analyzing, discovering, evaluating, acting, and problem solving. Recent technical advances in technology have created virtual worlds which have significantly expanded the capabilities of user interaction and development within these simulated worlds. Time is not far when India would be the most respectable hub for education owing to its capability to integrate its ethical values and standards with the latest technology advances at much lesser costs than any of any nation

and the second titled “Evaluating online learning”

This publication features seven evaluations of online learning programs or resources. The evaluations represent variety both in method of evaluation and in the program or resource that was examined.
